SMP Negeri 1 Welahan berdiri dengan dasar Surat Keputusan Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia Nomor : 02/9/O/2981 tanggal 14 Juli 1981 dengan Nomor Statistik Sekolah (NSS) 201032003034 dan Nomor Pokok Sekolah Nasional (NPSN) 20318384.
SMP Negeri 1 Welahan mulai beroperasi pada tahun pelajaran 1981/1982 dengan jumlah kelas sebanyak 3 kelas.
